Mother Kelly - Gene Richardson

Gene Richardson

Gene Richardson - bass guitar, vocals. 'Gene, Gene, The Bass Machine', hails from the Southern Kansas area. Gene's work with Tommy Jenkins dates back years to bands like Amplified Heat, Ash, and Powerhouse.

Born: Arkansas City, KS. August 15.

First gig: Eighth grade, me and four other guys formed a band called "Ash" in the Ark City area. I was the drummer and we were doing rock'n'roll covers from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to Parliament Funk. People booed us off the stage for playing Parliament Funk tunes so we turned to pure rock'n'roll.

I started playing drums when I was seven years old. My first drum kit was a beautiful set of blue metal flake Pearl's. I learned to play by playing with record albums. We formed Ash when I was fourteen and played all the clubs from Ark City to Wichita.

I played in several bands over the next 25 years and had some success with the power trio "Sass" with Fred Meek on guitar and Jeff Probst on bass.

When I left the band to move to Dallas, I fell in with the band "Happy Factory" where I switched to the bass guitar. Over the next several years I didn't like the heat, so I got out of the kitchen and went to Denver.

In Denver I started playing bass with a jazz trio called the Claremont Trio. They were hot! It didn't take long for me to realize my roots were in rock'n'roll, so I moved back to Kansas and eventually hooked up with Mother Kelly.

Playing with Mother Kelly has been a dream come true for me. It is something I have wanted to do for the past two years.  All the guys are really talented and they treat me almost like their equal. We have had some great gigs and a lot of fun the past couple of years. I want to thank my wife and kids for all their support and thanks to all my fans who seem to show up once in a while. I love you all. May the Good Lord Bless you all, Gene
