Molly Hatchet at Poncan Saturday

Molly Hatchet at Poncan Saturday

Legendary rockers, Molly Hatchet, will play at The Poncan Theatre Saturday at 7:30 p.m. A local rock band, Mother Kelly, will be opening the show.

Molly Hatchet is an American Southern rock band formed in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1974. Originating from the same city as the most well-known act in the Southern rock genre, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet shared influences and inspiration with them as well as another up-and–coming Southern Rock act, .38 Special, which featured vocalist Donnie Van Zant, who was the brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd lead vocalist, Ronnie Van Zant. Because of this, .38 Special enjoyed some influential connections in the music business, referring Molly Hatchet to manager Pat Armstrong. That led to a record deal with Epic Records.

A lesser known fact was that Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant was slated to produce Molly Hatchet's first album. He had done arranging and rehearsed the band in preparation, before leaving on the ill-fated tour. Molly Hatchet cut their first demos in Skynyrd's 8-track studio using their equipment. Hatchet would have been Van Zant's first production project outside of Skynyrd.

Studio albums for Molly Hatchet span the years from 1978 with their debut album "Molly Hatchet" which went platinum and was followed up by 1979's double platinum "Flirtin' with Disaster" album, to "Warriors of the Rainbow Bridge" released in 2005.

In addition to the 11 studio albums, Molly Hatchet has also released 12 additional compilation and live albums, the latest being "Flirtin' With Disaster Live" in 2007. The current lineup of Molly Hatchet includes founder and guitarist, Dave Hlubek. Other members include Bobby Ingram on guitar, Phil McCormack as lead vocalist, John Galvin on keyboards and organ, Tim Lindsey on bass, and Shawn Beamer on drums.

Tickets for Molly Hatchet are available at The Poncan Theatre at 104 E. Grand Avenue. The box office is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and will open at 6 on Saturday night. Tickets may also be purchased during the regular box office hours by calling the Poncan Theatre at 765-0943. Visa and Master Card are accepted.
